Cross-curricular impacts of the arts: A primer for school board members
Leadership, v36 n2 p14-17 (Nov-Dec 2006)
Arts education in California's schools has experienced peaks and valleys over the decades, due to budgetary cutbacks and an almost exclusive focus on literacy, mathematics and science achievement. Arts education in California's schools has experienced peaks and valleys over the decades, due to budgetary cutbacks and an almost exclusive focus on literacy, mathematics and science achievement. Gradually, the tide is beginning to turn, and interest in arts education has experienced a resurgence of sorts, resulting from new fine arts requirements at the university level, keen interest in using multiple modalities and intelligences and research that shows that the arts help better prepare students for college or the workplace. In this article, the author discusses the benefits of arts integration; emphasizes that arts integration requires careful thought, planning and assessment; and provides an example of a successful collaboration between arts providers, schools, a county office of education and the University of California in which professional development is provided to educators during an intensive summer institute and a follow-up session during the fall.

Shaping the Future of Postsecondary Dance Education through Service Learning: An Introductory Examination of the ArtsBridge Model
Research in Dance Education
The numerous ways that postsecondary students benefit from experiential education across the academic disciplines have been well documented in the scholarly literature. One exception, however, is in the field of dance, where these effects have not been researched as extensively. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, this study examines how university dance students participating in service-learning projects at primary and secondary schools are affected…
The numerous ways that postsecondary students benefit from experiential education across the academic disciplines have been well documented in the scholarly literature. One exception, however, is in the field of dance, where these effects have not been researched as extensively. Using a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, this study examines how university dance students participating in service-learning projects at primary and secondary schools are affected academically, behaviourally, cognitively, and professionally. The authors also explore the role of service learning in helping to develop socially embedded artists and model programmes that are successful in accomplishing this objective. Implications for service learning in the arts, limitations of the study, and directions for future research are discussed. (Contains 1 figure, 8 tables and 8 notes.)

Designing for the Future: Curriculum Planning for a National Network of Arts Education Partnerships
American Educational Research Association
Sound, research-based educational reform principles suggest that public schools need arts education as a regular component of a comprehensive curriculum that will lead to student success, and that Universities can and should apply their vast stores of expertise and personnel on behalf of K-12 improvements in teacher support and child learning. This objective can be accomplished by university-school partnerships using a multifaceted, user-friendly curriculum design based on research and…
Sound, research-based educational reform principles suggest that public schools need arts education as a regular component of a comprehensive curriculum that will lead to student success, and that Universities can and should apply their vast stores of expertise and personnel on behalf of K-12 improvements in teacher support and child learning. This objective can be accomplished by university-school partnerships using a multifaceted, user-friendly curriculum design based on research and effective practice. A study examined the iterative processes and outcomes of curricular development and project planning for ArtsBridge America, a unique arts education partnership among research universities (n=14) in five states and public schools (267), many of which are underserved, underfunded, and underperforming, according to state and national criteria. The study documents the changes to the planning process based on the results of a comprehensive needs assessment undertaken by researchers at the Claire Trevor School of the Arts at the University of California Irvine, the founding campus of the ArtsBridge. This paper presents in detail the revised and field-tested constructivist project planning design that emerged from the study. Appended are traditional ArtsBridge planning documents and re-designed ArtsBridge planning documents. (Contains 59 references and 1 figure.) (BT)

This preliminary review of the research literature addresses the impact of various diversity initiatives on student learning and experiences in college. These initiatives focus on practices and programs that address access, retention, and academic success of historically underrepresented students and also on more comprehensive efforts to alter the ethos of institutions to better educate a diverse cohort of students for a complex global society. The introduction focuses on court challenges to segregation in colleges and discusses the effects of the university culture on the success of diversity programs. Other topics reviewed include: using university resources and frameworks for the study of diversity; the significance of social and academic involvement for minority group students; research on institutions experiencing success in educating nontraditional students; and the impact of diversity initiatives on majority and minority students with particular reference to multi- and cross-institutional studies, single campus institutional evaluations, improving access for underrepresented students, improving academic success and retention among underrepresented students, and curricular and co-curricular programs. The review concludes that, in the context of the changing political climate for diversity at American postsecondary institutions, continuing evaluation of institutional diversity initiatives is necessary. (Contains an annotated bibliography of approximately 135 references.) (CK)
