Multiple levels of complexity in coaching
- It shouldn't come as a surprise that the more complex our environment the more complex the thinking that we need to apply in our coaching. We can identify at least 10 levels of complexity. I'm not going to go through them all, but here are some of the most significant ones. When we start out as a beginner coach, we coach individuals to improve their skills or performance in a specific area. It's relatively simple, linear activity. You probably learned the GROW model, goal, reality, options, will. And most of the time, it works for simple, linear issues. It's neat and predictable. When we coach an individual for personal transformation, we need to delve deeper into the complexities of their evolving motivations, values and identity. The goals are muddier, and almost always change if the coaching's any good. So, we can't rely as much on the simple process. Simple, linear approaches no longer work.
