The bulk carrier BERGE TAI SHAN (IMO 9675937) was captured by SynMax's maritime domain awareness platform, #Theia, in heavy sea ice in the Bohai Sea in January 2024, as she transited from Port Hedland, Australia, to Bayuquan, China. Between the 22nd and 29th of January, Theia’s proprietary AI tracked the vessel despite thick #ice conditions, automatically maintaining consistent oversight. With climate change opening up strategically important ice-bound sea lanes, including the #NorthernSeaRoute and #NorthwestPassage, the ability to detect vessels in ice-covered waters is becoming increasingly critical for maritime safety and #geopolitical awareness. Theia’s daily ingestion of more than 27 million km2 of #satelliteimagery, combined with AIS, synthetic aperture radar (SAR), and much more, allows continuous surveillance of the most remote and ice-covered maritime regions, supporting both commercial operations and international security in the northern hemisphere's evolving #shipping landscape.
